Out of Africa

There's a lookout point in Lake Nakuru National Park that was once hosted Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in the film 'Out of Africa'; it's worth seeing for the view rather than any movie connection. Standing overlooking the park, it's possible to see the entire circumference, picking out a flotsam line of flamingos feeding in the soda lake, giraffe cropping the branches of trees, and the silouettes of water buffalo and rhino in the distance.

Images from 24 hours in the relative wildness of Kenya's National Parks can be found here on Flickr.

Storymoja Nairobi

Sitting here in a cool Nairobi morning, preparing for this weekend's Storymoja Hay Fesitval, one of the Hay Festival's eight international literary festivals. In the gaps, I'm heading out to Lake Nakuru National Park and Lake Naivasha with journalist Anita Sethi before visiting the slums in Kibera tomorrow.

Of the organisations that I've met so far, one of the most inspiring is 826National, a US not for profit working on literacy in schools that helps children publish their own books.

More on this later...animals to see first.
